Grow a Butterfly Garden

Picture
Want to grow your own butterfly garden? It’s fun and it doesn’t
need to take up a lot of space.

You can plant your garden in a window box, in a small corner of
your yard, or in a 24-inch diameter pot.

Here are a few the things you’ll need to plant your garden: a grown-up to help you with the plantings; a small shovel; flowers, which can be bought in six-pack containers; potting soil; and a gentle fertilizer such as Miracle Gro (for kids). The fertilizer will help increase a flower’s colorful blooms.

When shopping for flowers, keep in mind that butterflies are attracted to bright colors like yellows, oranges, and reds. They also love to sip on flower nectar. Nectar is the sweet liquid found in flowers. And be sure to include green leafy plants, so butterflies have a place to lay their eggs.

Butterflies are drawn to sunlight, so make sure your garden gets plenty of sunshine. Never use pesticides, which are poison, to get rid of insects and weeds. You’ll have to pull the weeds from your garden by hand.

A butterfly garden should also offer plenty to eat. A secondary eating source is fresh fruit. Place a quarter slice of watermelon or a slice of fresh pineapple on an old flat dish. Butterflies love to sip on the fruit’s natural sweet juices. Also keep a small dish of fresh water, because butterflies get thirsty just like you.

Most important, remember to keep plants well watered and fertilized.

And it won’t be long before you see a bounty of butterflies fluttering around your garden just like in Butterfly Hollow!
